Shop-Air® : Harnessing the Power of Air

Shop-Air® : Harnessing the Power of Air

Everybody knows Shop-Vac® is the go-to company for everything vacuum related. We work hard to be the best, and we’re always coming up with new and innovative solutions that keep our customers happy. Scratch that. To keep them thrilled.

In short, we absolutely love the awesome power of a well-engineered and well-built vac.

But there’s something else we love: The power of air.

You see, we also build some of the world’s best air management products. But they’re so much more than just fans, and they have so many more uses than you might imagine. So as the weather heats up (including hurricane season), here’s a snapshot of our Shop-Air® products and some innovative uses.

Are you ready for the ultimate in air supremacy? Drum roll, please… Shop-Air® Drum Fans are for when you’re serious about moving a lot of air over a big space. They come in various sizes from 24-inch to 48-inch diameter. You also need to consider whether you want stainless steel or galvanized steel, and whether you want direct drive or belt drive. There are various pros and cons, so be sure to research what’s best for you. A great place to start is this Shop-Air® brochure, which covers all this and more.

These portable-but-powerful tools are perfect for forcing a lot of air over a designated space. Deigned to quickly dry carpets, floors, walls, ceilings, and closed spaces (like under kitchen sinks), these air movers are vital for cleaning up after a flood or just getting a project (like drying a recently shampooed carpet or drying a freshly painted wall) finished faster. By the way, NOAA has predicted an above-normal Atlantic hurricane season this year. We’ll be blogging about what else you can do to prepare in the coming weeks, including before and after checklists for storms and floods. But suffice to say, drying out with a powerful fan is crucial in keeping mold and mildew far, far away.

If you want the power of an air mover with the added capability of cooling off on a hot summer’s day, these air circulators may be for you. Depending on which one you choose, you’ll be able to easily ventilate small or medium areas in order to dry carpets and floors, remove odors, bring in fresh air, and basically just make the wind blow wherever you like. Just wheel them into the perfect location or mount them to the wall or ceiling.

Regardless of the size or drive system, drum fans can really take the sting out of a hot day:

Stay cool, inside or out.

Science tells us that a fan doesn’t actually make it colder but it can make an area FEEL colder – up to 10 degrees. Technically it’s called the wind-chill effect. How Stuff Works has more information in How do fans make you feel cooler? So fans are a great way to chill indoors without cranking up the expensive AC system, but it’s also great for outside use like parties or camping. (Be sure to keep the fan properly plugged into a grounded, three-prong outlet. Also, keep the fan away from water and bad weather.)

Bug off.

Summer season is bug season. But instead of slathering on DEET or some other chemical, why not just blow them away with a fan? Yes, it actually works. This New York Times article, A Low-Tech Mosquito Deterrent, explains why. Interesting tidbit: The American Mosquito Control Association says mosquitoes can only fly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour, depending on the species.

Stink control.

Many of us are lucky to have workout rooms at home or in the garage. Or maybe you have a workshop. The drawback to both scenarios? Stink – either from sweat or various glues, solvents, etc. Since drum fans move so much air so efficiently, you can focus on your day’s goals, not on the funky odors.
