Saving Play Time
A number of years ago, when our kids were small, we lived in an older house, one with galvanized and cast iron drains. My wife complained the second floor bathroom sink was very slow or plugged. I took the trap apart, finding it clean. I proceeded to probe the floor drain and found a hard obstruction. Using my Shop-Vac wet/dry vac I attempted to "suck" the object out. No success.

I reassembled the trap to the sink and filled the sink with water. I pulled the sink plug letting water into the drain. I then turned the vacuum on and plunged it through the standing water into the sink drain, covered the sink overflow sucking water out of the drain. I could hear something "clink" in the drain. The third time I did this process something rattled up the vacuum hose and dropped into the vacuum. At the same time the tone of the vacuum changed indicating the vacuum was not "dead headed".

I opened the vacuum and found a lid from a childs ceramic teapot set. Later, speaking with my children, I found out they had been "doing the dishes" in the sink.

The Shop-Vac prevented a very costly plumbing bill and tearing up the floor in the bathroom. Oh, I immediately replaced the sink trap with one having a guard. I didn't want to tempt fate a second time.

Other great ideas for your Shop-Vac ® Wet/Dry Vac™:

Leading wires through a conduit: Make a "mouse" of sponge or wadded rag with string attached, and use your vac to pull it through. You may have to seal the end of the conduit around the vac's hose with tape or padding.

Picking gravel from the lawn: A vac equipped with a Bulk Dry Pickup Kit is the perfect way to clean up the stones your snow-thrower has tossed into the yard before the mowing starts in the spring.

Retrieving a wedding ring from the drain trap: Dropped something valuable down the drain? Don't bother disassembling the trap and making a mess. Just empty and wipe out the tank of your Shop-Vac® brand Wet/Dry Vac™, and use the vac to pull it out. As a bonus, your drain may run faster afterwards as well!
